For a few years, I was a regular blogger on Localharvest.org. It was a reflection of the learning process I was going through at the time. Like a majority of Americans, I had no real experiences with farming or growing my own food, and there seemed to be so much to learn- everything from how to grow vegetables and raise livestock, to the broader issues of food safety, GMOs, and industrial food production. Eating is so basic, and yet, even with a Master's degree, it was a subject I found myself largely ignorant. My blog was a way to share what I had learned, and evolved to give folks more of an idea of what it takes to be a farmer. But life on a farm is cyclical- lots of things happen only in the spring, but they happen every spring. Same for any other time of the year. After I blogged my way through a few cycles, I came to a point where I felt I was not saying anything new, just repeating myself. However, the feedback I got from my readers was continually positive. I've decided to give it another go, although this time I'll be doing it here, on my own. I'm excited about the prospects of getting back into educating folks about food and farming, and excited to create this space to do so. While I enjoyed my time on Localharvest, and was honored to have a following of readers that kept me in the top 10 most-read blogs there, I feel it's time to see what happens when I write for just myself and my farm. But if you are wanting to check out my musings of the past, feel free to click on over to Localharvest and read what I had to say...having written over 100 posts there, I'm content to leave them there (at least for now) since archiving them here would be quite a project.
So, as I undertake this blogging 2.0 project, I hope you'll be a part of it. I welcome comments and questions about food and farming-whether it's in response to something I wrote, or just something you always wondered about. I'd love for this to be a two-way conversation, rather than me sending my thoughts out without feedback. My vision is to continue to tell stories about my life on the farm and to use those stories as a way to tackle larger issues, raising awareness about what kind of practices we support with our food dollars. I'm also thinking, this time around, I'll share more recipes as well- I love my cookbooks and I'm looking forward to sharing some great seasonal recipes and finding ones to share from my collection of antique cookbooks! Thanks for taking the time to read this all the way to the end! I hope this is the start of a great conversation on farming, food, and more, and I hope you'll be back for seconds!
